J. We would like to thank Hurst for his interest in our correspondence. His comments are addressed to the topic of U.L.M. realization, which has been the subject of considerable effort for several years. In our correspondence the primary purpose was to incorporate dynamic programmability techniques into the design of a logic gate. Univer-sality of the gate was not per se a design goal. In the case of ULM.2 circuits, as quoted by Mr. Hurst, it is assumed that permutation and complementation of input variables are available at no extra cost. This could be true in the restricted case of static (wired-in) programming with double rail variables available. In order to achieve dynamic programmability for these ULM.2 circuits, however, multiplexers are required to permute and to select input variables. These extra circuits generally require more components than the logic gate itself. On the contrary, in our correspondence the simultaneous consideration of limited dynamic programmability and logic gate synthesis using the inberent power of equational logic resulted in the design of a very compact circuit.
